Winter is dragging on here and although the days are getting longer (it’s not dark by 4pm anymore), there is still plenty of snow around and we’re a long way from sandals and shorts.
This is a shot from warm, sunny Florida that I took on a visit last year. There was a thunderstorm warning and these amazing clouds formed just as the sun was starting to set.
The photo below is actually 38 images combined to show the changing sunlight and shadows from branches reflected on a wall. They were taken at 11 fps.
I love the patterns that are made and how quickly they change. It seemed a shame to limit it to just one image!
It will play 3 times then stop. To start again, just refresh the page.
Winter was late arriving but here it finally is and with a vengeance. A couple of weeks ago, you could still see grass everywhere, now we’re knee deep in snow. And we’re seeing crazy temperature fluctuations in 24 hr periods. Yesterday we had freezing rain in the morning, in spite of the cold -14C/+9F (can’t figure out how we got freezing rain at the temperature) but then it changed to snow (9cm/3.5in of it), then during the course of the day, it warmed up a lot (to +3C/+37F) and by evening it had changed back to freezing rain. Then this was followed at about 11pm by one of the biggest wind storms I’ve ever experienced. Gusts of 100km/62mi. The house and windows had to withstand quite a battering.
My house is surrounded by tall maples and oaks – branches came crashing down all over the yard and driveway but fortunately nothing huge and not through any windows. And I expected the power to be out most of the night but it was only down for 3 hrs – thank goodness because the house cools down pretty fast once the heat stops coming on. Now today the temperature is going to drop back down to -12C/10F by mid morning and it’s still gusting so although it’s a bright sunny day, with the wind chill it feels like -22C/-8F. Too cold for mortal beings.
We’re seeing more and more of these yoyo temperatures in the last couple of years although this year even more so it would seem that the warnings about global warming bringing us weird weather, are very true.

Branches blown down & sticking into snow. Notice crusty shine on snow from layer of freezing rain (taken leaning out of a window, staying warm inside)
